Balancing strategy and tactics
Managing your product today whilst making sure it remains relevant for the future (i.e. balancing strategy and tactics), is a challenge for many of us. The problem is centred around three things; urgency, importance and scale. Tactical issues tend to be urgent small scale problems, whilst strategic initiatives are often important large scale work. So, we tackle the urgent and leave the important for another day. And another day. And another day…
Here’s how to fit strategy into a tactical world:
Break large strategy initiatives down into bite sized effort that build towards your goal.
You might need to write a full market assessment, but today just list the top 5 competitors.
Set an hour each day to tackle your bite sized strategy components. In that hour, turn off the tactical distractions (email, phone).
Consistency is the key. Don’t leave it until tomorrow, start it today!
