Profit and Loss

Financial literacy is core to the product management role, but it can feel overwhelming.

It doesn’t need to be that way. Complete product management includes being able talk through product numbers and being able to articulate the financial health of a product at management reviews. Three financial statements are used to run a business, but for most teams the Profit and Loss (or P&L) statement is the one that product management focus on. Understanding it means product managers can make better decisions and be more credible in reviews. But because most product managers have no formal background in financial management they can feel out of their comfort zone when it comes to a P&L statement - made worse by the typical senior management audience who can speak the total language of finance.
